If I bought this and varnished it, would it come up nice?

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/75305709 Home shopping on a major budget you see. When I say varnished it, I mean beg my dad to varnish it, I'm not exactly knowledgable about DIY! Would it even be possible?

1. Yes, you can buy a stain or varnish and do it, and it would look very nice. "Untreated solid wood - can be treated with lacquer, wax, stain or oil for a more durable surface." from the product description
2. there are many options to finish it. oil and wax would look nice on that item and be fAST AND EASY too.
3. seal it first.that wood will suck up all the varnish.and more difficult to put an even coat on it.
4. Minwax makes a rub on polyurathane that would look great on this, if you plan to clear coat it. It is also really easy to use, and you could do it yourself without having to worry about brushing it on.
