What do employers look for in a group assessment interview?

I attended one of these today, there were 6 of us, going for 2 vacancies. There were two group exercises where we had to promote an imaginary person for a job and then we were put in groups of 2 where one of us was the seller and the other was the buyer. I was the seller, I made small talk instead of just cold calling straight away. I stated that I was a new company and that we were willing to do a trial reduction in price and that the buyer could have some free catalogues not just for herself but for her her 'shop' so her customers can have a look at my products and spread the message on. I have never done sales/promotions before. The assessor seemed really impressed, stated that he could not say anything at the moment, but he will let the right candidates know if they have the job. The thing is as well, I know it will sound strange but on the way to the interview I saw two magpies together and going home I saw another 2 (which means 2 for joy!) During alot of the assesment, I spoke up and voiced my opinions and views and basically made myself heard, there was another strong candidate, I was the seller and she was the buyer as I mentioned earlier. I am thinking I probably have the job because she is a strong candidate and the assessor probably put us together to see what we are like if we potentially work together, literally, what do you think? Have you been in a situation like this?

  1. Interviews are scary aren't they? You worry about them before, during and after. Relax, at this stage you will either get the job or not but whatever the outcome it doesn't reflect on you or your personality. it's all about:- 1. whether the interviewer was a good one 2. whether there was a specific (hidden) quality he was looking for 3. whether after the interview, the job remained the same as before the interview (odd idea I know but you'd be surprised to know how many jobs change shape through the interview process) 4. whether the job itself remains available - they might have found a candidate or decided they didn't need to job filled after all - that can be for lots of different reasons 5. whether the interviewer fancied someone else 6. whether the interviewer even gets to make the final decision . . . . . and lots and lots more . . . . it sounds like you had a good interview, although I can tell whether you spoke too loudly or pushed yourself so far forward that you didn't listen as much as you spoke, or how you were dressed or sat or stood . . . . there's too much stuff to think about. always do the very best you can and then leave it in the lap of the gods.
